Tanzania

Tanzania and Zanzibar.  Fun and heat!!!!

We went to Tanzania! You may say “ but Nate you said you went to Zanzibar too?! “ Here’s a fact you may have not known about Zanzibar. Zanzibar, is not a independent country. It’s in Tanzania. The population of 59.73 million.  The bordering countries are Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, DRC, Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique.

It’s pretty cool that they have two flags, right?  The capital of Tanzania is Domda. It used to be Dar Es Salaam and most people think it still is.

First, we landed in the Zanzibar airport. It was such a tiny airport.I think its the smallest airport I have ever been to.

It took a long time for us to get through customs/immigration because we had to fill out tons of forms and then wait in huge lines.  When we finally got out of the airport, we drove to our hotel in Stone Town.  Stone Town is famous for it’s spices and seafood. We went on a tour of Stone Town. We walked around the town and went through a market.  There was soooooooo much stuff like spices and food in the market.

There was also a memorial and museum to where an old slave market was, mosques, one church and the house of the famous rock singer, Freddie Mercury, who sang for Queen. Queen the rock band not the Queen of England.

The slave market was where people bought slaves from other places in Africa. It was shut down in 1876 and was one of the last slave markets in the world. The slaves were torn away from their families and put on boats to be taken to the market.  The slaves were so squished into the boats that many of them died or became sick. Once they got to the market they were crammed into small cells  to be sold as slaves.   We were able to go into the old cells. They had one side for the men and one for the women and children.  They had very low ceilings, so the slaves wouldn’t have been able to stand up, no bathrooms and showed how they were chained in their cells.  It was very sad.  People came from all over but many of the buyers were French, German and Belgian

We went on a walk and got Sammy some new clothes and we got a special drink made out of sugar cane, lime ginger! It was delicious.

After the weekend in Stone Town,  we went to Dar Es Salaam to see one my Dad’s friends from university. He lives in Dar Es Salaam with his family. We went to the beach, had amazing sushi and pizza. Also, I wrecked Isaac in Smash Bros.

Finally, we went back to Zanzibar.  This time, we stayed at beach resort. We snorkelled, swam in the ocean and the pool.  We went on a tour to Prison Island.  We had to go on this old wooden boat.  We were the only ones on the boat which was great. When we got to Prison Island, we went to see all of the tortoises.  They are called the Aldabra tortoises.  They are the biggest tortoises in the world. They are not native Zanzibar, 4 of them were brought to the island by the British in 1919 as a gift. Now there are over a 100 on the island.

Good bye Tanzania.
