art made by paper cranes
Hello everyone.
Today, I’m going to write about our trip to Hiroshima. We went to Hiroshima because my Mom wanted us to learn about the history and when we were in Portugal, we read a book called “Sadako and the 1000 paper cranes”. It is about a girl from Hiroshima.
Warning. If you don’t want to cry your eyes out please skip this blog. You have been warned!
On August 6th, 1945 at 8:15am, the U.S.A dropped the Atomic bomb ( called the little boy) on Hiroshima. 73,000 people died when the bomb hit and 146,000 died overall from the bomb or diseases caused by the radiation. After the bomb exploded, the temperature rose to 4,000 degrees Celsius and most buildings were made from wood and paper so they caught on fire very quickly. The only thing left standing was a building they now call the Atomic Bomb Dome.

We went to the Atomic Bomb Dome. It was like a ruin that has been abandoned for 1000 years. They have left it like it was on the day the bomb hit.

Did you know a doctor forgot some work, so he ran down to the basement to get them. When he got down to the basement, the bomb hit. He survived the blast because he was underground. A miracle for sure.
We also saw the Hiroshima Peace Park. It was sad.
Before coming to Hiroshima, we read the book “Sadako and the 1000 paper cranes”.
It was sad. It was about a little girl who was 2 when the bomb hit. She didn’t get sick until around 10 years later and ended up dying of leukemia at the age of 12. When she was in the hospital, she folded paper cranes because her friend told her that there was a legend that said if she folded 1000 cranes she would get healthy again. She made 644 before she died. Her classmates folded the 356 left she was buried with all of them and the doll her classmates gave her.

They also made a memorial statue for her. It is called the Children's Peace Monument.

Now, people come and make cranes for Sadako. We made cranes and brought them to her too.
We also went and saw the Hiroshima museum. We learned more about the history of Hiroshima and the disaster it left behind. :( I hope there are no more Hiroshimas. It was very sad, so I cried.

Here are some happy things that happened when we were in Hiroshima.
We saw some of the Canadian rugby team and got to meet them. It was amazing meeting them.
Guess what? We also got to see Uncle Mike! We got to try bubble tea with him.
It was fun! I did like the tea but it left a bad taste in my mouth. We saw my dad he stayed with us.
Talk soon. Nate
